Hi - Just wanted to introduce myself. I have 5 dogs - 2 Chows, 2 Chow mixes, and an English Bulldog. One of my Chows, Bubba, was born with severe hip dysplasia. He also has had, in the past 6 months, 3 surgeries on his rear, left leg. Luxating Patella, and ACL repair. The same vet did the 1st 2, we chose to go with a different vet, whose procedure was a bit different than the 1st vet's, for Bubba's 3rd surgery. Each surgery was exactly 2 months apart. We we hoping this last surgery would be the one to fix things. Bubba is now bunny hopping, and limping again, and has considerable swelling. He has been strictly confined after each surgery, with me sleeping in the living room with him for the past 6 months. We have an appointment with an Orthopedic Specialist, this Tuesday, the 20th. Wish I would have known better before, but this is who we should have seen from the very beginning. A couple of vets we have talked to, suggested amputation, and gave us a heads up, that this is what the specialist might suggest. With amputaion, my fear is that by doing this, all of the stress and work will be put on the remaining rear leg. But with his severe hip dysplasia, isn't that going to damage, or be too much for that remaining rear leg? One vet also told us that he hoped we loved our dog, because he was going to be a money pit. He said that Bubba will definitely be facing a total hip replacement 4-5 years down the road. Bubba is now 3.
Any input would be so much appreaciated by both Bubba and I.
Thank You,
Sheryl
