What to do, our dog will not touch dog food
Hello all,
I'm at a loss. We have a 1 year old Bijon Poo that will absolutely not touch any kind of dog food, not matter what we buy, and I'm pretty sure we've gone through at least 7 kinds from hard, to soft, to semi-soft. I'm not sure if we should just let her get hungry enough that she'll eat, she will go 2 days with just a couple morsels of food so we've resorted to people food. I know table food is not good for her, but we can't let her starve either.
Anyone else have this problem, please offer advice.
Thank You

Hi,
Is this dog new to your family? If so, sometimes it takes several weeks to months for a dog to adjust to a new home. This could have an affect on her appetite.
Whether she's a new pet or one in your household for awhile, I would talk to your vet immediately. Loss of appetite can be the sign of illness. Once you rule out a physical problem, you need to stop giving her table food immediately. Right now you're teaching her to hold out for the "good stuff". We had a similar problem with our dog Maggie. We chose a high quality dog food, put the food down for her at the same time every day. After about 30-45 minutes we picked up her bowl no matter how much she ate. Once she figured out that she would only have the opportuniy to eat at certain times, she began to eat when the food was put down.
Hope that helps!
Amy

I have to agree with muttlover13, check with your vet right away! And I do the same with my dogs, if they don't eat breakfast, I pick up their food dish and wait until the next day at breakfast and try again. But definitly check with the vet, and something to consider. By changing the food so often, you may have given her an upset belly. Table scraps aren't a good idea, as you are setting her up to think that what you are eating is better than hers, and she will refuse dog food. People food is ok, but hard to control vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients that dogs need in each serving...call the vet and get her in to be seen! Good luck!

That's hard situation for you, hope you've already brought her to the vet. Also ask for vitamins that could help your dog the nutrition she needs. Hope there's nothing serious on her and will settle soon.

Your dog prefer to eat table food rather than dog food...I think you can give her a homemade one and not the commercial one...try it probably that might work...And if not consult a vet for much reliable advise...("

I have the exact same problem with my dog. We got her spayed a week after we got her, before that she ate canned food happily. The antibiotics she was put on really did a number on her digestive system. She had to go on a bland diet and then homemade food for months. When we tried to get her back on dog food it was horrible.
It's been about 7 months and like you, we've been through all kinds of brands. She will eat some food for a day or two, and then act as if it's the most horrible thing in the world. The advice we've gotten from everyone, including our vet, is the same. We have to be harsh and just leave the food down until she eats it. She's been 'spoiled' with tastey human food and just knows that if she refuses the dog food, that's what she'll get. It sounds as if your dog is doing the same.
We managed to finally find a kibble she'll eat from our hand, like a treat. It's Oh Natural. We're leaving it in her dish now and simply waiting for her to eat it. It's hard looking at those puppy dog eyes, but we have to do it until she gives in
