Brand New Dog Owner - Piper & Peyton
Hi!
After many years of begging, our teenaged sons talked DH into getting a dog. We had made plans that we would try to find a dog at the Humane Society right as school let out, as everyone would have more time as the summer vacation started (DH is schoolteacher).
Yesterday, we picked up Piper & Peyton, littermate "brothers", about a year old, 31 pounds apiece, collie mixes. We did not originally intend to get two, but the Society would not allow them to be separated, and it is clear they are very close. They are also recently neutered. They are bright-eyed and eager to please.
They are beginning to adjust. The reason they were at the pound was because of former "unsuitable living conditions". Not exactly sure what the situation was, but doesn't sound too good. They are both even-tempered, though, although a bit skittish and shy. They both come when called, sit nicely, walk fairly well on leash, and are having some success at potty outside, with a couple of accidents.
We are crating them at night (they whined for awhile last night, but settled down finally). Otherwise, they are out with the family and really seem to desire to be around people. They literally follow from one room to the next.
One concern is that they do not seem to want to eat. We are using Science Diet which was what was used at the Society. It seems untouched. It is our intention not to feed them people food. I keep thinking that they will eat when they are hungry. . .
Anyway, I have a lot to learn and look forward to reading the advice and experiences of experienced dog owners.
