Question New Member New Dog

Hi everyone , my name is Jeanne, I live in Maine and I owned a nine month old Aussie,,,, to make a long story short, we just adopted a friend for her that doesn't seem to want to be friendly at all at this point,,,,

The adopted dog was in Louisianna, we are told she is an Aussie till we go to get her and then we are told she is part catahoolah leopard dog,,, well she is the same age , same size, and close coloring to an aussie,,, so we live with the tail,,, she just came home with us today,,, after that long of a trip we couldn't disappoint her,,, she is absolutely lovely with us,,, very well behaved,,,, problem is my puppy has been socialized and loves to play,,, this girl is in a strange environment and just spent 4 days in a kennel in the back of a van with 5 other kenneled dogs making the trip,,, so she is very timid,,, at least I hope that is what it is,,, she has been laying next to a gate with my dog but every time my dog sniffs her she growls,,, so we haven't let them run free together yet,,, and to take them walking at the same time on leashes the new dog sits and tries to hide while mine jumps rolls and escapes in order to play,,, we didn't want to start out our lives together in an aggressive manner,,,, does anyone here have any suggestions on making peace and getting the two together,,,,

Being day one I figure no problem keeping them separated,,, but I would like to be able to have bother the dogs in the same room with me,,,,

It's going to take some time. You are in the right about keeping them apart, but having a gate that they can sniff each other through. You'll want to give the new dog a little time to adjust...like you said, it was a long trip and you don't know what she went through before you got her. Try socializing her by signing her up for a class. But give her at least a week or a little more to adjust to the new surroundings. It will take a gentle hand and time for her to be friends.

You should plan a good introduction to them. For now, always take them to a good events, play and have fun (don't forget the treats). When someone gets aggressive, interrupt immediately. Show them you're the boss.
