Hi Tweener, Thanks for the welcome. I have 6 labrador retrievers. The oldest is Gypsy, then I have her daughter Missy, then 2 other daughters from another of her litters, who are Sally and Kirra, and their brother Chester. Lastly one who is not related to the rest who is called Christy.

Gypsy, Missy, Kirra and Chester are black labs and Sally and Christy are yellow.

They don't really do any tricks. They are show dogs so love going to shows, strutting their stuff around the ring. They are all natural retrievers and will fetch a ball all day. They love to swim, and if they can't get to the creek, they will lay in their water bowls. They are just very sweet, fun loving dogs, who I love to take on walks over our farm.

Default Breeding labs

Hi, I'm interested in breeding labs but wondering about a couple of things. Firstly, can you breed dogs within their same bloodline? Eg, can the sire then breed with a daughter from one of their litters? Also, can a dog that doesn't originally have papers be hip and elbow scored and then be sufficient to get papers? I don't really understand the papers bit

Hi thanks for the welcome.

Lablover - I am from Australia so depending what country you are in the rules could be different. As a registered breeder, to breed here our dog must be papered (having a certificate of pedigree ) and be on the main register which means you can show and breed from them. Labradors also need to be hip/elbow scored which is mandatory and eye testing & DNA testing for PRA is not mandatory, but most reputable breeders do this now as well.

Also as far as line breeding, I believe a Father daughter mating is too close. I have done a grandfather/granddaughter mating, but new the lines really well. Line breeding can strengthen your lines as long as you know exactly what the they are and what is behind them.

I am talking from a registered breeders veiwpoint!

Thanks 4labs. While we aren't registered breeders we believe our male is a fantastic dog. We've had him hip scored to ensure he was ok to breed with. His first litter included a gorgeous female chocolate lab and it would be ashame to have her desexed but unless we want to separate every season it's the only option.

Definitely want to go down the line of buying registered dogs to breed with at some point. Not concerned about showing them, only have dogs with great temperaments for family pets.

Have all papers and required shots and many more before going to breed, it is a wonderful feeling when you're a responsible one.
