new and sad
Hi everyone! I'm soooo new to this so forgive me for any present or future muckups! I've just lost my beautiful 14 year old bordercollie/kelpie cross mate to that cruel disease spinal arthritis and I am so missing her. The last best thing I could do for her was have her put to sleep at home on her favourite bed (mine) and it does help a little to know that she was comfortable and loved and kissed as she slipped away but I still look for her and still save the last corner of my toast for her before I realise shes not here! I think I need this site to share the joy of sharing life with a dog (or 2 or 3) and to re-educate myself for future puppy experiences...Its been a long time since a puppy was in the house. Hope the future new ones will like living with 2 cats and 4 chooks!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss, but 14 years is a pretty good life for a dog!
One thing you might consider would be to rescue a dog. With the economy the way it is, a lot of people are giving up their pets. So its really easy to find a dog who came from a family, that is already housebroken, that is good with kids/other pets/etc.

I'm looking into flat coated retrievers... I've heard they are sociable and active and as we live in the country near the great ocean road with lots of beaches and bush, I'm really looking forward to getting out and exploring it all with a dog friendly extrovert or 2. My beautiful girl Mooey was the best ever but she never got along with other dogs even though we tried to socialize her from day 1. Of anyone has any thoughts on this breed i'd love to here from them.

Welcome and my heart goes out to you on your lose. I lost a beloved dog companion last year and had to make the hard decision to have her put to sleep. Allow yourself to grieve--grieving over the lose of a canine companion can be just like grieving over the lose of a human loved one.
As for picking a new companion: do your research on the breeds you are thinking about and consider rescue. Most breeds have a breed rescue and they can usually be a great resource not only of dogs but of info on why these dogs end up in rescue which can be a clue as to whether they are a good fit for you. For example, at one point I was considering a Jack Russell Terrier. I went to the breed rescue website and read their "why you don't want a RJT" page and realized that my apartment and work schedule would not be RJT approved.
