Since you are living with your parents, you really have to talk to convince them. Know what are their reasons for not allowing dogs and then ask us for advise.

Yeah, unfortunately, your parents are in charge, as it's their house. Your best bet would be to find out their reasons, like wishbone said, and try to talk them out of it. If they still say no, you'll just have to respect their decision. I was really bad when I was young, I would bring home animals I knew my dad didn't want, and it never turned out in my favor. It caused a lot of arguing and hurt feelings and most importantly, undue stress for the animal. I realize now how wrong that was, and how disrespectful. Just because I want a pet doesn't make it a good idea. I hope this advice helps. Good luck convincing your parents though. I hope it works out for you.

depending on your age, could you do some dog sitting or dog walking for other people to show that you are responsible to take care of a dog? dogs are more than just cute snuggly pets. they have needs. perhaps your parents don't have the money to take care of one financially right now. perhaps they have other reasons.
I would ask why they don't want you to have a dog right now. Listen to them with an open mind. No attitudes.no matter what they say.
then ask if you could get a job with dogs. like I mentioned above to show you are responsible. if your in school , you will want to reassure them you will NOT let your grades drop.and don't let your grades drop after getting a job or dog.
how about saving some of that money to help with dog supplies after all ,you are the one that wants it.
this is what I have my kids do when they want an animal. they have to do research on the animal. take care of a stuffed animal for 1 month and yes they have empty food dishes they have to pretend to fill with water and (stuffing which represents food)every day. I remove the stuffing while they are sleeping or at school to see if they will forget. they have to spend time with this stuffed animal every day for a month. if they want it bad enough they keep up. my kids have never let an animal die or neglected one that they wanted. I believe it was due to my pre animal steps.
with a dog don't forget to get some information on dog training. dog housebreaking, etc. don't forget to check on health concerns of certain breeds.
You must have the information for your parents. you need to show them you know the responsibility of owning and caring for a dog or any pet for that matter.
hope this helps. let us know what you decide to do and the outcome.

Welcome to the forum. I am big animal lover but,I did not grew up with dog up until 3 years ago. My mother was scared of dogs. She says she had scary memories with dogs so,I really could not push it.
After marrying to my dear husband,I waited til we get our house and now we have our dog. It was a long wait for me,but worth it. My father used to have German shepherd when he was a kid,so he is fine with dog and has visited us in US but not my mother. She still scared of dog even if she asks on the phone how my dog is doing and talk about Palette.
I had many animals when grew up.I had parakeets,rabbit... I walked my rabbit, bathed rabbit... It probably was odd picture to imagine I walked my rabbit but it was fun. My mother did not mind having them,so I enjoyed having animals around me,and I waited having a dog....

Well, I don't wish to be rude and ask you your age, but if you are over 18 and have a job, wait until you move out and get settled before becoming a dog owner. If you are under 18 and still attending school, try volunteering at your local animal shelter. Maybe your mom might give in if she sees that you are being responsible with the animals there. And the animals shelters could use the help. Maybe after you work there a while, you might decide that getting a dog might not be the best thing. In that case, you saved a dog from going to a shelter.

Hi koozie, Maybe you should wait till your mom let's you. It take's the entire household to take care of a dog and they need love from everyone....
I agree with what someone else wrote about maybe volunteering at a shelter to be around them... The dog's will love you for it....

This is an excellent idea! I don't have children yet, but when I do, I am defiantly going to implement this in the future. Thanks!:-D

doggievogue,
glad you like my idea. I started doing this about 15 years ago when my son wanted a pet at age 4. I thought hmm, how can I make sure he is ready. so I helped him read up on the animal. then we discussed what we learned and then my creative mind kicked in.
I always hated seeing and hearing kids get animals and having to get rid of them because they didn't keep up with it. So, I wanted my kids to be prepared for what they were getting in to.
I am sure when their friends and our families came over it was a bit embarrassing patting and combing a stuffed animal. but they had to until their time they set aside was over. I have found alot of my son's friends started doing the same thing. It worked well with my daughter too.
just get those creative juices flowing and who knows what you will come up with. lol
