Default Howdy From Miami

Hi. I just got a Sheperd/Lab mix named Harlan. He is a handful! I am used to Rat Terriers so this is a big change for me. I'm gonna need some help.

Cute pup you got there--He kind of looks like he could be full of the devil--but he still looks like a 'cuddle-upper!. There is some imp. info on German Shepherds in this forum that I have posted before---I think you'll find it in the dog health and nutrition area---but not positive---You could also go on my profile page--hit statistics and then hit 'find all THREADS by Corky/Max--(make sure you hit threads and not posts)---Scroll down to the title with German Shepherds in it and click on it. I'm compelled to help all the dogs I can!!

You are absolutely correct in that he is full of the Devil!!! He's not much of a cuddler so far either . But he's young yet. Thanks for the info.

It's classified! Some of my friends were asking me if he had Chow in him? I hope not. But I asked the lady I adopted him from if the Dad is a full Lab and she said he is a rescue and his owner 'thinks' he might be a mix. Uh Oh. NOW she says this.

Hope it will be the start of a long and beautiful life together, whoever his ancestors are!!
Right now the GSD definitely has the upper hand. As a Lab breeder I would have said unlikely to be a purebred Lab parent, as the Lab gene appears to be a very strong one, and mixed breed Lab/anything usually look more Lab than whatever they were mixed with.
Welcome and best of luck.

Thought you might be interested in the description of a Chow so maybe you can check out if your pup has any of these 'things'. It will not rule out that it is a chow mix but might 'tell' you that it is (because of the tongue?!) The 2 most distinctive features of the chow are its BLUE-BLACK TONGUE and its ALMOST STRAIGHT HIND LEGS, which make its walk rather stilted. Dense, furry, double coat is profuse and comes in solid black, red, fawn, cream, blue or white, sometimes with lighter or darker shades, but never particolored. Ears-small and rounded and there is a huge ruff behind the head, which gives it a lion-like appearance. Please let us know about the tongue and legs! Very curious!
