Default intro

Hello,

I'm not sure how all this works but I'll give it a try. I'm Dee and my dog is Lobo a mixture of wolf, husky, shepherd. He's between 11-13 and we just found out a few days ago he is diabetic. We seem to have that under control now but his biggest problem seems to be arthritis in his back legs. I've giving him glucosamine in capsule form but I think I'll try to find liquid form. Does anyone know how much and when one should give it to him? He weighs 90 pounds.

Welcome to ILD mate. Don't know what are the good medicines for your dog, maybe a vet visit worth for his arthritis. All I can suggest is to keep a cool and comfortable place for his condition.

Default Hello-welcome

I too am looking for a supplement for arthritis. I know what are the best things to give--saw a good answer someplace and if I find it again, will let you know. It gave the amounts of each supplement for the dif. weight of the dogs too. One thing I do remember is that chrondroiten (may be mispelled) is no good and it is the glusamine (mispelled also, lol) that is doing the job---The 2 are usually combined but if you can find the glusamine without the chrodroiten--may be cheaper ?? I put supplements/arthritis/dogs in my browser and am going to paste one that I found that has the supplements that are best (from what I had read before). I know that the MSM is one to have and can't remember if fish oil is mentioned here --don't think so--But it is also good for arthritis. I think I pasted a lecture in this forum just recently (last 2-3 days) on fish oils--might look that up too. Also would put the 3 words above that I put in my browser--a lot more sites to look into about this--I only --so far have just looked at this 1 site. Okay so here is what I am pasting--This is a product that 'they' are selling--I'm just giving this to you so you can see what supplements are good!!
TREAT YOUR BEST FRIEND TO A HEALTHY LIFE...

NUPRO JOINT SUPPORT ALL NATURAL DOG SUPPLEMENT has Glucosamine complex, MSM and Ester-C* , which enriches our original formula, especially for the active dog.

Your dog now has the benefit of a scientifically balanced formula that is rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and essential fatty acids along with the extra ingredients to support normal joint function. NUPRO provides the necessary raw nutrients (lacking from cooked and processed dog foods) with easily digestible whole foods, specially designed to condition your dog from the inside out!

NUPRO JOINT SUPPORT is not just for senior dogs or those with arthritis! The active athletes, show dogs, working dogs, police and search and rescue canines, sled dogs, hunting dogs, AND large breed dogs, as well, will profit from having glucosamine in their diet. The combination of NUPRO's raw formula with the added extras make for a superior product from which ALL adult dogs will benefit.
GLUCOSAMINE COMPLEX (500 mg. per scoop) is our own special formula that is an easily absorbed natural substance that stimulates the production of proteoglycans which help to maintain the health and resiliency of connective tissues and restores the damaged cells of cartilage tissue. Glucosamine complex helps promote the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints.

MSM (300 mg. per scoop) is a natural source of bioavailable sulfur, essential for the growth and repair of tendons, cartilage and other connective tissues. MSM is also an anti-inflammatory agent.

Ester-C Chelated Mineral Blend (300 mg. per scoop) boosts the absorption of the glucosamine complex and MSM and promotes collagen formation.

NUPRO Joint Support also contains Norwegian kelp, flaxseed, nutritional yeast culture, desiccated liver, bee pollen, garlic, calcium citrate, lecithin and lactobacillus acidophilus. (ME TALKING HERE--These 'extra' ingredients just above have nothing to do with helping arthritis. And I hope you know about garlic--It is an 'iffy' thing--much difference of opinion on it. I use it (not because of arthritis) but you do not want to give very much at a time!!

NUPRO is made with fresh, premium ingredients that are human-grade quality. NUPRO does NOT contain any preservatives, sugar, fillers, corn, wheat, grains, or by-products.

so you can see what supplements are good!!

I buy glucosamine sulfate from my local drug store. My 42 pound border collie X takes 2 500mg capsules per day in Greenies Pill Pockets. It is the same thing as what they sell you in the vets office and a great deal less expensive.

A few years back, a friend of mine found something that I'm pretty sure I recall was make from deer antlers or the moss that grows on deer antlers... Unfortunately, he has since died so, I can't get any more information.

Exclamation Some info I found

GLUCOSAMINE

Also known as Glyco-Flex or Cosequin, this is not really a medication but rather a supplement. When dogs are affected by degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis their joints lack good quality joint fluid and cushioning which consequently brings to bone degenaration. Glucosamine derives from the mussel Perna canaliculus (hence, the fishy odor of the tablets) and it helps lubricate the joints once again. Always inquire with your vet about putting your dog on any supplements, not consulting with your vet may cause a delay in getting better or even a worsening of symptoms since your dog may be suffering from other serious disorders not related to arthritis.

Interesting But one of reasons I posted is because of the last sentence!!

Default thanks to the glucosamine advice from all

Thanks again for all your advice with Lobo's arthritis! I'm giving him glucosamine 500mg and we'll see how that is. He seems to be better but that may just be that I have his diabetes under control (JUST FOUND OUT A WEEK AGO HE HAS THAT!). It's been a week since he's started insulin and he's a lot better. For those asking on pictures, I'll try to get some. I changed computers and I don't have that many on this one.
