Meet Punkle and Dietlind
Hi all,
We just joined and are happy to have found you. We moved to the California's Central Coast a wee while back (2.5 y), from beautiful Scotland! Punkle (aka as "Susan" by her proper name) is my first dog, now just 9y old, and a mighty traveller - I already took her back to Scotland for a home visit last year, and I might do it again for a 3month sabbatical next year. I know it sounds like torture, and probably would be to many, but my girlie doesn't mind it in return for the excitement and variety her travels bring! Maybe because she is not a rescue dog but "only" an accidental love child who has not ever been abandoned by anyone.
Lucky girl & lucky me!
I'm joining the list because I want to do more.. particularly to help rescue more beautiful and innocent dogs from euthanasia. I won't be able to take any in for longer than a few days for the next year (job & travel), and Punkle and I are best with border collies (how breedist, I know ). Maybe I/we can help find emergency homes with 501(c) organizations for at least a very few of those all so very many who'd deserve to be given more time, help transfer them etc.
I saw all the great special threads and groups for these things and will start posting there.
Nice meeting you!
Dietlind & Punkle

Hello and welcome to the forums!! Good luck on rescuing dogs from euthanasia, it takes a lot of courage to stand up and fight for something. Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I do some rescue work but since I have two dogs and a cat in an apartment, I take in only emergency rescues - those who have been injured and require wound cleaning and bandage changes or orphaned kittens and puppies who need to be fed around the clock, kept warm, stimulated to eliminate and become used and comfortable with being handled by humans. A lot of the rescue community doesn't want to take in the orphans because you end up functioning on almost no sleep until the babies begin eating semi-solid foods and are able to "explore" their environment. There are also tons of puppy puddles to clean up! The kittens seem to get the idea of the litter box pretty fast. Puppies...Well, they're a little slower to catch onto the outside thing.

Thank you all for the encouragement :-)
I'm learning as I go along and am figuring out with a "mini-project" where/how I can help. My mini-project is saving 5 border collie Xs from euthanasia whom, I hate to admit it, I selected near-randomly... (see my post on the Rescues-dogs forum). I'll keep you posted via that other forum about how it goes, I haven't updated today but I managed to at least save their lives by money donations to get them neutered and/or pay adoption fees. Still looking for places for them, too.
Most of all I'm finding that the shelters+rescues+volunteers might benefit from better networking/coordination... and since my profession is in computation and education, there may well be a summer project emerging next year to ameliorate this . I saw forums like this one used for this purpose in the UK and *my word* did they save many dogs that way! Speaking of which, I saw tristanichole's forum-group "Animal Rescue Transports" Social Group on this forum, check it out if you like, I think that'd be a great way forward and - as it would be US-wide - a very ambitious effort!
Lara's Mom, I saw your replies to tristanichole on the rescue list and people like you (I meet some in Scotland and here in CA as well, who help where it's really needed, hands-on) were part of what inspired me to join this forum!!!
Btw - Scotland is the best country for bringing up a puppy EVER (I'm from Switzerland myself i.e. this is between Switzerland, UK, and Central Coast-California so far). Noone is afraid of dogs there and/but if your dog runs into a sheep field the farmer has the right to shoot them... they do so only after a warning, mind you!... so dog-owners have to be in control and the doggies trained but whether on leash or by voice that's often your choice. But if your pup jumps up once it's not a big deal (provided you correct them of course). Best of all, dogs are not only allowed on trains and buses but they travel for FREE on most routes. Does wonders for them being socialised & a wonderful and respected part of Society. I admire everyone of you who have such well-behaved dogs without having had this luxury and freedom we did, we were surrounded by people who *loved* dogs by default (sometimes more than people...).

How would you like to stop all the problems with your pet? I have some good new but it will take some time on your part. Obedience training will bring out the best in your pet.

That was so sweet to hear, glad you've joined us here, welcome . Maybe you can do fostering to help dogs in shelter get ready to be adopted.
