Proud Chigi Owner
Hey there, found this forum trying to find info on a new breed of dog, a mix between a Chihuahua and a Welsh Corgi (AKA Chigi). If you know of any information on this breed, please send it my way. Otherwise, maybe during her growth I will write out the behaviors and training tips for the breed
Anyways, glad to be here, and looking forward to making some new friends along the way!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I'm not quite sure what your question is with regard to a "new breed" of dog. Mating two pure bred dogs does not create a new breed of dog. For example, my oldest girl is the product of an accidental encounter between a pure bred border collie and a pure bred springer spaniel. What that makes my Bailey is a mixed breed dog. She isn't eligible for registration by either of the breeds she came from and of course, has no pedigree.
I think what you're referring to are what are often called "designer dogs." These would be labradoodles, schnoodles, jackapoos, etc. These dogs, despite being deliberately mated, are mixed breeds. They are also ineligible for registration "from either side."
I've never seen or heard of the combination you're speaking of but I'm thinking, "must be really cute!" I'm really not familiar with either breed in this particular combination and I haven't run across anyone in the forum who has one. You may just have to "write the book" yourself on this particular cross. Do you have pictures? I'd love to see them!

I'm in Pembrokeshire - the home of the Corgi - and we see the odd Corgi cross but I've never seen a Corgi/Chi cross. Mind you, I just love Corgis as they are (although the result of the odd accidental mating is always very cute) and don't know why people want to cross breed all the time.

I agree with you completely that these so called "designer dogs" are a bad idea. However, as they say, done is done. The hands of time cannot be turned back. All we can hope to do here is to educate people so that hopefully, those who come here will learn that the people who are paying incredible sums of money for these dogs are being "sold a bill of goods." Also, it is my hope that we will be able to convince at least some people not to carry on this trend while thousands of wonderful and deserving mixed breed dogs are put to death every day in North America.

first and foremost, she was a rescue. A friend of mine had fostered her, and I have adopted her. I don't want anyone to think that I put alot of money into a breeder to get her. I do not, and never, want to buy from a breeder. I intend to have her fixed when she is old enough, and I hope so far that I am training her correctly. If its not an official breed, then I am sorry for assuming so, I am just looking for tips, hints, and helpful "dos and don'ts" for training, considering the last dog I had was a toy poodle that died four years ago due to epileptic seizures. I am a little rusty on dog training, and since I do have a pup, I know it is important for me to start and start right.
And on the picture question, as soon as I know how to load pics on this forum, I will put them up. She is too adorable.

In my opinion, the most important to remember when training a puppy is consistancy. Come up with a schedule, and stick to it. Don't let your pup get away with things "sometimes". That is what makes or breaks training to me.

I have a chigi as well
I have a chigi named Merlin who is also a rescue. I don't know what kind of abuse he might have suffered before I adopted him. He's about 5 years old and I've had him for just over 2 years. You might be better off training your girl because she's a puppy. With Merlin he has the bad nerves of a chihuahua (maybe because of abuse) and the herding instincts of a corgi. I would advise watching her for those herding instincts and channeling the drive into something positive. Merlin goes nuts if he sees someone on a bike, kids on a skateboard, etx. He also likes to chase my cats who luckily have let him know he's not in charge. He has incredibly good health, much better than the only purebreed I have (also a rescue, Japanese Chin). I think mutts are the best, good luck with her!

chigi
I have 2 corgi's and think they are great dogs. My wife brought home a corgi/chihuahua mix from a rescue shelter. I figured it was an accidental mating, but looking on the internet made me think it might have been intentional. I have fallen in love with this dog and have more fun with it than with the corgi's. I think whoever thought of this combination is on to something.
