Default New rescued dog behavior

Hi
I have a new corgy mix that was a stray. He is about 7 or 8 years old
He has had one accident in the house so do I need to start training as
if he were a puppy or what? He's been to the Vet, seems to like staying
outside but enjoys coming into the house also. Thank you
His name is Hardy.

No expert here but I would think you may have to pretend this is like a puppy first being trained.

Suggestion: Find the blue strip (with all the white words) across the top of the page(s) in this forum---Find the word Search--click--Put words-house training an older dog in the search box--leave selection on threads (later, you could try posts also). Not sure what all you might find but I know this topic has been discussed here before! Happy hunting!

Strays are different than puppies...but a little bit the same...

They never had to let someone know they had to go, they just went wherever they were. Also, they can suffer from "dirty dog" syndrome, where they do no mind going to the bathroom where they sleep. I don't know if this is your problem or not, but the best advice is to take them outside regularly much like you would a puppy. You have to teach them that is where they go to the bathroom. The part that is different about strays than puppies is that theirs bladders are mature and they don't have to be taken out every half hour.

I had the same problem with my rescue girl when I got her. It took us about 2 months to completely eliminate ALL accidents, but she now knows how to "tell" me she has to go out. She caught on a lot faster than a puppy too.

I think that should be fine, besides you will not be in full effort for he's already trained and just needed to be mastered.
