Default Rachael Ray - turkey bad for dogs?

Hi, I have a German Shepherd/Retriever mix. Her name is Sable. She was a city dog and I ended up babysitting her for 6 weeks at my farm and it extended into more than a year. After her original owner saw how much fun she has living in the country he could not take her back to living in a highrise apartment with a paved back yard. He fed her all kinds of people food, but I just read this article where Rachael Ray says it could kill your dog. Is this true?

I don't think she knows what she's talking about. I frequently roast a turkey and cut it up to make homemade dog food. My girls are both perfectly healthy. (I don't use the skin and I refrigerate the stock overnight and take off the fat the next morning.)

Default Turkey bad?

I heard that also but I believe it's just the turkey skin because of the fat content and the bones. A good deal of commercial dog food contain turkey.

Exclamation About Turkey--And the Saline Solution Injected In It!

I also feed my 2 dogs turkey minus the skin and fat( I have read that turkey fat is the worst fat--It is very dense) but I see there is another worry (not that I think Rachel Ray knows a he** of a lot about feeding dogs and prob. wasn't even referring to this---But I am finding that most of the turkeys have been injected with a saline solution (salt)---Hard to find some of the frozen chicken breasts--cheaper brands for sure that don't also have to much salt. As stated before (In the thread titled-Foods that are Hazardous to your Dog) Too much salt is bad for a dog and that 2 tsps. could even kill a dog. Of course you would hardly give your dog that much but smaller amounts can still prob. make him sick or do some damage! Just check the bag for the amount of salt/sodium is in even 4 oz. of turkey/chicken (considered a serving for a human--also realize that the % mentioned is prob about 5 times that for a dog--Not good! And more than likely (esp. bigger dogs)--You may be giving 8 ozs. or more so wouldn't that be about 10 times the percent given for 1 human serving of 4 oz??!! And tis the season for turkey bargains so I have been feeding my 2 dogs quite a bit lately---My Max (cocker spaniel) threw up the next morning (not a whole lot-but I'm pretty sure it was because of the salty turkey) after having about 6 oz. of this turkey in a meal and this happened twice! Think next time I cook a 'cheap' full of salt turkey for them --I am going to boil it with enough water and a couple of 'throw-away' white potatoes(Suppose you -the human could eat these potatoes if not too full of salt!) to soak up some of the salt!! A person could also change the cooking water about half way through cooking with some different fresh water to soak up some more salt. Also when roasting one of those turkeys---Don't even want to use the stock as that would be full of salt--Da** shame! It is too bad that these turkeys/frozen chickens have this crap injected--Just another way to add more weight --so it will cost more!! And when I think about it (I feed a raw diet and some home-cooking) I have to figure in more salt that I may of had in their breakfast meal--like when I feed cottage cheese (any cheese has salt) or canned salmon/mackerel--Even bread! Could add up to quite a bit for a whole day of meals. Have to read the labels!!! Surprising what all has salt in it and do remember about the % given is a much higher % for the dog!! I never give any table salt in their meals as they are getting enough anyhow!!

So glad I am following this forum on Twitter. I didn't know Turkey fat could be dangerous to dogs. I have given Meka any but I do give her sliced turkey.

Deli lunch meat? Full of salt too!

And without the skin I hope! Turkey fat (and skin) and other too much fat like from pork is pretty bad too! Too much fat I think could lead to Pancreatitis or Colitis and/or other digestive system problems. And you don't want that as that could lead to permanent damage and other diseases. And if I remember right--just one episode may be all it takes! Mr. Vega what is your take on this subject?--How dangerous it could be if too much fat and caused other permanent problems/diseases?

Being over weight can cause a dog to get pancreatitis-eating too much fat from human foods can cause panceratitis

I have given her Oscar Mayer thin slice turkey and chicken, didn't realize it has tons of salt. Here I thought I was doing a good thing by giving her the thin sliced meats. I will have to put salt content on my radar and watch this. She's the love of my life so want to do what's best.
