Hello George,
Welcome to the site. I love Great Danes, my daughters Godmother had one named Skylar. We called him the gentle giant. He loveed to lie on the floor and let my daughter lay her head on him to watch TV. My sister-in-law also has a Great Dane who she got from the local animal shelter. He was very abused and afraid of Men for the longest time. My sister in law has him over 5 years and he is finally getting used to my brother in law. My sister in law also rescued a peek a poo. The great dane and the peek a poo are best friends and the little one lays in between the great danes legs to sleep. They share a bed and often drink the same bowl. Legs as we call the great dane will wait for midgie to eat before he will begin. You are lucky they are great dogs.
I live out in the country as well with about 5 acres around us, we don't own the land so I try to keep our Shep mix off the land but he loves to run. As far as the training I use small treats as a reward for everything our little guy does right. He knows if he don't wipe his feet he don't get a treat, he knows if he don't do his business outside he don't get a treat. We can leave the treats lying out in plain site and he won't touch them. We must hand it to him or he won't take it. (this one took a while but it is for his safety)
