Hello from newbies Mandy and Wispa
Hi
I wanted to say hello and introduce myself and my 20 week old puppy Wispa.
Wispa is my first dog and is proving to be a lovely girl She is a boxer/choc Lab cross and growing fast!! 15.8kg today at exactly 20 weeks of age, I think she will be a biggun.
Looking forward to chatting to others and hopefully getting some tips etc x

Sorry about your pup and the lungworms. Here's an awesome link with tons of info (like 4 pages if you go on to all pages) on lungworms in dogs. Hopefully it's helpful;

What an adorable puppy! Looks like the black lab genes came through... you will find lots of helpful information on this board if you have further questions about her lungs. Hope all goes well and welcome!

I agree with Tucker!----You sure there is CHOCOLATE there--looks pretty black to me! I see mostly the lab part too! But, no matter--very pretty dog and I like the name--Any story behind it?:mrgreen:

The name came from my children, when we saw her first she had more of a dark choccy colour so the kids named her after a chocolate bar! She is far darker now and looks black. She looks a lot like a lab except for her legs, they are long and from behind typically bandy! LOL!
She is so sweet natured and thinks the whole world is her best friend. She is most boxer like in her behaviour though, she jumps a lot and uses her paws all the time. I love her to bits

There could be black and chocolate coloring, one or the other, or neither but it doesn't matter because labs hold the genes for all 3 colors of hair, black, chocolate, and yellow. For example, I know someone who had a litter of pure labs. The father was black and the mother was yellow. There were black and yellow pups in the litter, but also a handful of chocolate one too. It's only hair color. My mom may have blonde hair and my dad may have blonde hair too, but I could very well turn out to have brown hair.

Her dad is a pure choccy lab and her mum is a red and white Boxer. All of the litter were the same colour, the only difference being the amount of white on their chest. Her Dad is a big choccy lab too!

even if the dad was chocolate lab he still could have passed on the black gene to your dog.
I don't see any brown there, just black. Does the dog look a bit brown in direct sunlight though? I know a black lab that looks a bit chocolatey in the sunlight.

Very true from our experience. Our dog is a yellow lab - the mom was chocolate and the father was black. All the puppies were either black or yellow - owners were disappointed not to end up with any chocolate ones but think they are less common for some reason.

In order to get color in a litter it comes down to the genes. Putting the correct combination together to increase the likelihood of the color one is going for. I know in Miniature Pinschers in order for my Blue to produce a litter with blues I would need a black with a blue parent of grandparent. Blue to blue can result in health issues as with Merles in Aussies breeding to one another. Chocolates generally from what I have been told like blues in Pins is a recessive and diluted gene. It would therefore probably be similar in that they would need a yellow or black who came from a chocolate as a breeder.

Here's a cool article describing the history of the chocolate colored labrador and its history if anyone's interested;
