Default New girl from Ocala FL

Callie is a beautiful Golden Retriever that is 61/2 months old. She is 95% wonderful and 5% terrible. She jumps and nips very aggresively. She is playing, but we are not! She hurts us! She has not learned that you should not put your mouth on a human. We have had dogs for 30 years and never had this problem. She comes from a show dog bloodline and is very confident. She is not afraid of anything, which is a good thing. When she nips, she wrinkles her nose, puts her gaurd hairs up, and you can hear her teeth snapping. She tries her best to bite you! Nothing works. We have tried everything. I need help! I am commited to this puppy. She will be a wonderful dog! Please help! llshrigley

I don't normally suggest physical punishment for a dog, but I'd give the dog a swat in the muzzle. Kinda like a bite back. Don't hurt the dog, but make sure it stings. And don't play with your dog when it acts like that. Before it gets out of hand, turn your back and ignore your dog. Reward your dog for good behavior. I've also found a knee to the chest works great on that kind of behavior too. Not hard enough to hurt your dog, but hard enough to get your point across. For small dogs, use two fingers to the chest.

I've tried most all of the lunareclipse's suggestions for my lab when she was a puppy, and they worked great. I used the knee to the chest for jumping and turning my back and ignoring when she nipped. It worked really well for me so I would suggest those as well, hope it helps you!

Goodness...I've had dogs with issues before and well the only advice I could hand out is to be consistent. Punish when necessary and reward when she is being good. My dog was very defiant and had loads of temper tantrums when he was a puppy...my only way of breaking him was to punish (and some times shun) when he was bad, and then reward him when he was good. Is your dog afraid of something that is causing this behavior?? For my dog this was the case... as he was afraid of kids. To get him past this I would take him down to the local movie theater and make him watch as countless kids came out...

I kept this up for a very long time until he finally (with age) realized that kids were nothing to be scared about.

Stay consistent with whatever you try...and good luck we've all been there!

First of all, welcome! My grandmother lives in Ocala and I often drive down to see her. I love the horse country out there.

As for the dog, I can't give you any better advice than what you've been given already. I tapped both of my pups on the nose when they got bitey with the humans, and quickly handed them something that they COULD chew on instead of one of us or our belongings.

So as soon as one of them would start to bite, I'd firmly tap their nose and wait about 30 seconds. Then hand them a chewy or a nyla bone.

Good luck with your dog. I simply love Goldens!
