Hello all,

I'm living and working in Philadelphia but am originally from Germany.

Having lived with dogs all my life, I decided to volunteer at the city's animal shelter to a) extend a helping hand to animals in need and b) cope with missing my dog who I left with my mom in Germany. 2 birds with 1 stone

At ACCT (Animal Control & Care Team) I am assigned to a Pen Pal and hope to be able to find her a new forever home - maybe with the help of this forum!

Welcome to the forum & the U.S! I can imagine it's tough leaving everyone so far behind. How long are you staying in the US before you meet up with your dogs & family again?

..And best wishes in finding a nice home for the pen pal!!

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Makes me feel right at home

Actually, it wasn't tough at all since I have been itching to live abroad for a few years now. Thanks to skype the distance doesn't feel as huge and that really helps. My dog is who I miss most though. And I wish I could snap my fingers to have her here with me. Who would have thought I'd miss walking a dog in the pouring rain one day?!

The plan is to stay for a year. But my boss has already expressed her interest in keeping me longer. In that case I HAVE TO fly my doggie to Philly or else I'll go nuts.

My pen pal has luckily been pulled out of ACCT by a no-kill rescue in Jersey. So she is save! On to the next one.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
