Default New dog owner, need some help

Hi all -
We are adopting a dog from rescue. I had a dog while growing up, but have only had cats for the last 15 years or so. Now we are adopting a dog that is a beagle mix and about 1 year old.
We've met the dog and it is friendly to my son (3) and it seems to be fine around the cats. What I'm interested to know is what to expect for behavior when we bring it home with us for the first time.
We will get getting the crate that he has had in foster for the last 6 months. I have all the basics at home and ready to go. The foster people say that he doesn't like his crate, so I'm not sure what I have to look forward to in terms of retraining.
Also, they have started him on Clomiaprine to ease the anxiety of going to a new home. I'm not really sure what to think of that. I'm a bit freaked out that he will have all manner of anxiety problems once we get him home.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

I've no idea what clomiaprine is so can't advise about that. Do you know if he has anxiety issues? I wonder if it is just a routine that the shelter advises all fosterers to do? One thing that is good for anxiety is a DAP diffuser - DAP - Dog Appeasing Pheromone. Lots of dogs find it very calming. You can also put some on a bandanna to tie around the dog's neck and it helps with travel sickness and anxiety on journeys too. You can get it from the vet or online or from pet stores.

You don't HAVE to use a crate although with a small child in the home it would be good for the dog to have a place where he can be sure of being undisturbed. Crates are also good for anxiety, especially if you make them dark and cosy, but confining the dog to a small area while you are out or in bed can work just as well. It can also be helpful to have baby gates on doors so that your son and the dog can watch each other without any risk of either disturbing the other.

If you have chosen your dog through a decent rescue and felt happy enough to go ahead with the adoption don't worry about having cold feet now - you'll be fine :-)

Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read!
