Default Hello from Pennsylvania!

Hi everyone! My name is Amy, I'm 19. I currently have one dog, he is a one year old Chihuahua and his name is Chowder. Unfortunately, last Friday, my best friend, a Maltese named Ajax, died suddenly. He was 12 years old and we had been through soo much together. This is the hardest thing that has ever happened to me, and it is very hard for me to deal with. Today, my husband informed me that he is buying me an 11 week old Poodle named Romeo (we're going to re-name him because I once had a cat named Romeo). Though no dog on this earth could ever replace or even compare to Ajax, I know that I need to move on and that getting this dog will be good for me. It's also pretty cool too because Romeo is only one week older than my son, Declan!

I have ALWAYS had at least two dogs ever since I've been born. My Dad is a German Shepherd fanatic, so I've had quite a lot of experience with them. My Mother is a Maltese fanatic, which got me hooked on the breed. We've had a total of 3 Maltese, 6 German Shepherds (Some we rescued and we adopted them out to good, loving homes), 2 Chihuahuas, and one Miniature Schnauzer. I also will rescue not only dogs, but cats as well.

When I get Romeo next week (the Poodle), I want to work with him, and train him enough to visit Nursing Homes, and Hospitals. The reason for this is because my son was recently in the hospital the week before Christmas. For all the children that were in his unit, they got visited by a few service dogs. Although my son, only being 5 weeks old, didn't understand what was going on, the other older children did, and I loved seeing how happy it made them! I want to bring that kind of happiness to people and children.

Anyway, sorry for the long intro. I'm already glad to be here, though! (:

Hi Amy. It's nice to have you on here too. It sounds like you & you're family have done some wonderful things in rescuing.

I've never had a poodle but I've known some & they always seemed like very intelligent dogs. I'm sure you will do great in training him. It sounds like you have your hands full right now. I hope your son continues to do better in whatever was wrong. And my condolences in your losing your Ajax so recently.

Enjoy the forum & hope to see you on them!

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Smile Welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear of your loss of Ajax, I just lost my 12 yr. old Corky--a male Cocker Spaniel/Golden Retriever mix 7 months ago so I know how you feel. I did rescue an older female (same breed mix)-Sami about a month and a half ago and it does help--but of course I will always miss Corky.

I love that name Chowder--and it sounds appropriate for a Chihuahua (the Ch of both, etc)

My ex has a poodle mix and it is the smartest dog I know! Be sure and keep us posted on your poodle! Let us know what name you come up with for him.

My parents always had Miniature Schnauzers---perky little dogs!

I too, hope your son is healthy and happy now.

And you do have your hands full it sounds-esp. with getting a new puppy too but you prob. have a lot of energy at your young age! And sounds like a great idea--training the poodle to visit nursing homes and hospitals! I'm sure a lot of people will benefit from that.

Hope you continue to like this forum and 'chat' at us a lot about you and your family of humans and dogs!
