You may have heard the name Seamus, but the spelling might be throwing you off. It is pronounced Shay-muss, and is of Irish origin. I have just really liked the name. The name has been used in the Harry Potter series.

I do have pictures of him, but since I am so new, I am not allowed to post images or links. I need to reach 50 post. I did start an album and posted in the puppy picture section; I'm not sure if these pictures were able to be reviewed or not yet.

Pretty dog--esp. like the last pic. He looks like a good lap dog/cuddler? That is what I will be looking for (lap dog) next time around--My Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel and my pure Cocker are getting to be more then I want to handle at this 'stage of the game.' Are the other 2 dogs yours too? Lol, being as I am not into Harry Potter--never heard of that name but glad you told me how to pronounce it as I didn't like the name the way I was pronouncing it.

Seamus is really handsome. Isn't if funny how the UK and America seem so far apart sometimes? Seamus is a name that everyone would have heard of over here - not because of Harry Potter, just because it is well known. I would never have thought of it as a dog's name but it is great. Might add it to my list of fantasy dog names LOL!

So are terriers yours as well? I'm a real terrier nut LOL!

I suppose now is a good time to get into the back-story of how I acquired Seamus.

I was in search of a Christmas puppy for myself, after my husband had agreed we could get a dog. I really wanted a dog that would be great kept indoors and had my mind set on a Corgi. However, I did look at other breeds while searching pet-finder, contacting breeders, and browsing through craigslist ads. I spied the ad for the Parsons Terriers, and then went to see them. The woman chatted my ear off, and said somethings I would have been ashamed to boast about. However, she said it was all her husbands doing and he had recently passed away. There was a litter of PRTs (like 10 pups), they had recently weaned; they were selling them and the woman was getting rid of Penny (The white prick eared one) and Boss. Penny was 4 yrs old and I had asked how many litters she has had; the woman told me six litters. That was bad enough, but the real whopper is when she went to tell me about Boss. Boss was 2 yrs old and was the father of the last 2 litters. Penny was Boss's mother. I was absolutely disgusted. I had only wanted one dog, but the woman wanted them both to go together, her selling point was that they were unaltered and a good breeding pair. I wasn't looking for dogs to breed though, and just wanted one dog, so I had to leave them.

I then came home and spotted the ad for Seamus. He wasn't a Corgi, but he was so adorable. I immediately called the number listed and was lucky the ad had just been posted. I went to look at Seamus that evening, and was in for another big shock. The owner was the daughter of a breeder who had received Seamus as a gift. She was hoping for a show quality dog, but Seamus grew up to be only pet quality. He was oversize at 7 months and weighs in at 11.5 lbs now. The owner was apparently so disappointed that Seamus was only pet quality, she was neglecting him. I wasn't able to speak to the actual owner, but her husband met me at the door. He asked me not to come in, because the house was a mess (the odor was pretty bad). He told me he was in the service and was dressed in military attire. Well, the husband had just gotten home that day from being overseas. He and his wife had apparently gotten into an argument over the state of the house and the treatment of the dog, and they decided to re-home Seamus. Seamus was infested with fleas, and his coat was in terrible shape. He was matted, had scabs and was dirty. The husband told me that his wife didn't want the dog, because he wasn't "show quality". I did take Seamus home with me.

After I got home, and Seamus had settled in, I thought about Penny and Boss. I felt sorry for them, and called the woman back. I asked if she still had them and she did. I said "Great, I changed my mind, I'll take them." I picked them up that night. The next day, I took all 3 of them to the vet. I had them all altered, vacs caught up, and treated for fleas. They had to stay over night at the vet, and when I picked them up, I was told Penny had an ear infection that needed to be treated. So, I got her medication for that. Anyhoo, I already knew I was in way over my head, haha, I was really just looking for one dog. My husband was slightly irritated with me, he had agreed to one dog..lol. I then contacted a JRT rescue through the Woodstock Foundation. They had no space at the time, but I agreed to foster them until they could be adopted out or space became available. I kept them for about 2 months. It was very hectic, but I did manage. They were great dogs, I was just ill equipped to handle multiple dogs in my tiny apartment at the time, and I was very pregnant. It was the end of December of 09, January 2010, and Feb. 2010 all this went on. I had my baby girl March 3rd. Penny and Boss did find new homes, and Seamus seems to be pretty happy and content with us.

Boy that was a long story, but the experience did motivate me to educate myself about the problems with BYB's, puppy-mills, pet over population, and abuse.

What a great story. PRT's are really not suited to appartment life, nor are corgis as they are working dogs. You are definitely a doggy angel and it sounds like Seamus really landed on his feet (or should that be paws) when you found each other. It makes me feel sick to think of poor Penny and all that breeding. Well done for giving them the chance to be pets.

Yeah, PRT's are definitely not apartment dogs. I knew the Corgi was a working dog, but I felt at the time I could handle the demands of a single herding dog. I really like the look, size, and temperament of the Corgi. However, 3 dogs and two of them being the highly energetic PRT's was quite a handful for me. It was comical to watch Boss leap up so high from the ground when he was excited or wanted to see what was on the kitchen table for dinner, lol. Walking Penny and Boss was another matter all together. They were not very good with a lead, and if they saw any rodent or cat, they would practically pull my arms out of their sockets to try and chase it.

I'm glad I came across all three of them, and feel lucky to have found Seamus.

Love the story behind your dogs---Thanks for taking care of them.

I got a little more curious about the Pom breed so looked up on my favorite site for the breeds--info and lots of pics. Thought you might enjoy the site:
Pomeranian Information and Pictures, Pomeranians, Pom, Poms
A lot of info there--Don't know how much of it you already know but it is good info to know about so just in case--maybe something there for you to learn too. And there are 4-5 pages of pictures to click on. Be sure to scroll all the way down on these pages (esp. the 1st page) Ads get inbetween the article and is misleading--making you think you are done before you are.

Not sure after reading about this breed if they would make a very good lap dog or not----sound a little independent! Does your Seamus like being held (like a lap dog)?

If you will note there is a huge list of breeds to look up on this site--all in alphabetic order----Just go to home page and click on All Breeds. A lot of other info in this site also on all kinds of articles about dogs. (See right side of the page(s).

Seamus is a good lap dog, and enjoys being held. Actually, he enjoys being anywhere I am. Seamus isn't pushy about being in a lap though, he will only do this when invited. Usually he just lays at my feet. He is independent though, he makes himself busy playing with the cat or my children, but he always tries to be where he has sight of me.

I'm really glad he isn't one of those yappy, over protective dogs. He doesn't bark much, only when someone knocks on the door or if he see's my Son walking home from the bus stop. Seamus doesn't seem to have any typical problem behaviors of smaller dogs. However, I need to work on his confidence some. He is perfectly fine with dogs his own size, but terrified of big dogs. He immediately assumes a submissive posture when approach by one and hides behind me. He also does this with adult humans, he really loves children though. He opens up to children just about immediately and tries to give them kisses on the face. I think he knows exactly how big he is, and is intimidated by size.
