Default Just getting going.....

My pup is a charmer named Rufus. Me I am a 42 year old long time dog owner. I tend to the larger breeds so when I saw the add for boxer/rottweiller mix puppies I was thrilled. Rufus is a baby doll. He stands 19 inches and 35 lbs at 4 and 3/4 months. What has amazed me is his intelligence! He knows 13 tricks including the basics and is working on 4 more new ones.

What I have been looking for is information on how long I can expect rufus to keep growing. His dame was 130 pounds and his father 160 however his 1/2 brother topped a whopping 180 pounds.

His brother was a huge pure breed boxer. Don't ask me where they found such huge boxers but they did. I saw them with my own eyes.

Rufus looks like a rottweiller and has the personality traits of both breeds. Making him dilligent, loyal, clean and well behaved. Okay so I love my dog LOL... how long will he grow? some of the literature says as long as 3 years is this right? I don't mind that I love a big dog the bigger the better. I was just use to shepherds growing for 2 years.

Aww Rufus is adorable! He looks like he is going to be quite a big dog. I would say generally dogs are full grown between 1-2 years. It's different for every dog but that is what I've generally experienced.

Hi. Welcome to the boards. Yes, some of the bigger dogs can keep growing for quite sometime. Although the growth slows down dramatically by a year. For instance, Akitas (which I'm new to) grow until they're about 3 years old. Some of them grow quick while others fill out over the years. They also change a little in structure. I have a 10 month old right now, and even though many people may think she's matured by looks alone, I know she's likely to fill out in the head and body in a couple years. I assume many thicker breeds are like this. If I had to guess I'd guess Rufus will be about the size of the dam, or a little smaller. Just be sure not to speed up the growth/weight so that you're not over burdening the bones & joints too quickly before they're fully developed. Normal & steady is good. They will be as big as they're meant to be when they're older. The only difference will be in their health.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

He looks cute. We like big dogs too. We have saint bernards and a great pyrenees (so far).
