Stray brought home by daughter
Hello all; My daughter was driving down a busy rural road with no homes or apts located near. She spotted a distressed small dog and was afraid it would be run over. Having a heart like her mother, she U turned and called the pup to her. It came when called and stayed in her lapp on the remainder of the ride. She is afraid I will turn it back out. It appears to be comfortable around people and responds to basic communications. Fairly affectionate but warry. I need to know what kind of breed or mix this is. The coat is mottled short hair. Long body, fairly pointed snout. I think it's a natural jumper, also. It got on the couch and when getting down jumped up and out. Pretty good jump too. I have posted a pic, need some help. I'd like to keep- but don't want a pitt and with the mottled body, I am uncomfortable. I have a 1 year old grand daughter and she is over often and my other dog is an SPCA special very gentle and knows her place. Also a house dog. I do not want a house dog and an outside dog.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am prepared to give this pup a wonderful life; but not willing to allieniate my family to do so. If a questionable breed- I will fund finding her a new home.

What a pretty little dog. There was a discussion just a few days ago about brindle coats and apparently it is a recognised chihuahua coat. I would definitely think she was a chi cross. I'm not familiar with Pits as they are banned here in the UK but we do have Staffies which are similar and she bears no resemblance to them at all. If I had to put a label on her instead of just saying small mixed breed I would guess that she has chihuahua and dachshund in her make up.

Welcome to the forum!
Yogi is the authority on Miniature Pinschers so I may be expecting a 'holler at' if I'm wrong and I know the coat is not Min Pin but could be part Dachshund also which could have that coat coloring. Anyway that is my guess--Minature Pinscher and Dachshund. And if I was a 'betting fool'--I'd almost bet my life that there is no pitbull or any of it's 'relatives' in your dog!!
If you would like to see pics of different breeds--This is a good site:

Addendum to original post
She is a prolific jumper and based on several hours of observation: some little child is missing her. We will be posting "FOUND" pics at the usual places. My inclination is to take her to my vets office and have them just check her out as she is a guest in home and may be permament. But should I wait a couple of days for the owner to respond or pass?? Confused.

If the dog appears healthy---Why not wait a few days before going to the vet until you know if someone is going to claim her? If you go to the vet now and you have no history on this dog--You will be made to get a rabies shot and she may very well already had one---I went through this with my rescue dog that had no background info. Too many, esp if right on top of one another is definitely not good! If someone claims her and has shot records--She won't be required to get that shot. (or any other shots) I know if I lost a dog and someone found it and got shots for it (and I then claimed the dog--I would be very upset about unnecessary and stressful, unhealthy extra shots. Grateful that someone found my dog but too harmful on the dog if already had the d*mn shots!

I don't think it looks like there is any pitbull in her. I would have to agree with the other and say some sort of dachshund mix. maybe min pin maybe chihuahua! I would wait a few days on the vet visit and see if anyone claims her. Good luck!

Still have the little dog
Getting pretty attached and no one has called. My daughter named her "Dobby"- after the elfen character in Harry Potter. So very energetic and a very prolific jumper. Does a lot of standing on back legs, good balance. Although she takes off in the park. I have to use a leash. My older- more mellow dog, comes when called and is very cooperative, this fireball is looking to get under fence, out doors etc...
The more we have her around the more apparent it is becoming that she got away from someone. She does respond to most commands except, Dobby come here when she is not on a leash. She turns around and jusrt continues on her way. But does not run away, just prances and does not attempt to run off- when you retrieve her. She also prefers out backyard to the house. We do have a pretty big yard. She spends her time harrassing the birds I feed, and the squirrels.

Definitely doesn't look like a Pit but she is a cute dog. Hope you find her home!

To me, she looks like possibly long haired chihuahua and brindle italian greyhound... Of course its a guess, but she seems to have the face shape and stature of a chi and the brindle coat, folded ears & "spring loaded" legs make me think italian greyhound. Since long haired chis have long hair and italian greyhounds have very very short coats, it could possibly average out to the uneven legnth of your doggie... Im sure theres some other breeds in there too, but those are whats most aparent to me... No pitty

Did you check to see if the dog is possibly microchipped? Is it possible to check all the local animal shelters or pounds know you have it in case the owners call looking for it there. What is happening with it now?
