Default New here - our dogs are mostly dumpees

We live on 5 acres in North Florida - dirt road - we acquired one dog 7 years ago - a Chonzer (mini-Schnauzer/Bichon Frise cross) then an English pointer showed up with her 4.5 month old half Shepherd Puppy - and we couldn't find homes so we had neutered and spayed and they became part of the family. November 18 a Chihuahua male aroudn 3-5 years old showed up at 9 pm - just walked up to gate and stood there while our other dogs barked their heads off - well, he is in early stage heart worms and being treated which will not be nice when he starts stage 2 in a few weeks. Now - at 1 am last night our big dogs started barking and finally let them out to see where they were going and they cornered something just off the deck behind the trash cans - well it's a puppy - he looks a lot like a Bernese Mountain - 7.6 pounds and FULL of fleas, testicles not descended - thinking around 8 weeks. Has had two Dawn baths and fleas are still jumping off. He's very quiet and wants to hide. Our vet is closed today. I don't WANT or need a 5th dog! But don't want to take him to the pound. Would love to find a GOOD home for him. Not even sure what he is - uploaded picture - waiting approval.

Berners are great dogs. I would suggest contacting a Bernese Mountain dog rescue and see if they will take him. In each case where you found the dog, did you contact the pound and shelter in your county to see if anyone was missing a dog? We found a dog recently in our kennel outside. So we ended up with 5 dogs also.

Default Bernese Mountain

Shelter and our vet both closed today but will be checking with the pound. Thing is it is over a tenth of a mile to the nearest house and he doesn't belong to any immediate neighbors - but of course will be watching for signs, ads, etc. To show up at 1 am and come under the fence we think people drive to our corner, see there are no more houses for half a mile and dump them there - they come to us because we are the first place they see! (Or we are marked by dogs the way they say hobos used to mark houses where they could get a handout! LOL) He was very dirty and FULL of fleas and so far two Dawn baths have not removed them all - so NOT cared for - he wasn't particularly starving so he had to have found food somewhere recently. He is as sweet as can be - thinking about 8 weeks but at 7.6 pounds that's small. I would probably keep him if we didn't already have so many! And sad thing is we've already in previous years had pound take three older ones that showed up at two different times. It's a big expense and I won't have a dog that isn't taken care of and fed good quality food but we can't just keep doing this!

Recently, there was a story about a family who finally recovered their dog after a couple of years. Somehow, it had made the trek accross the continent. So who knows how they ended up at your place. I admire you for taking them all in. Maybe you could get listed as a rescue and get free food from the pet food companies. If you were interested that is.

Thumbs up Your doing a good thing

It is wonderful that you are caring for these "unwanted" animals that just get dumped off or "let out". Its a sad world. Its good to no that there are people like you still left in it! Hopefully all goes well for the pup, you never no you might just "need" that 5th dog! lol
