Default Inner Conflict

I am new to the forum, hello everyone . . . so here's my story. I am so conflicted I don't know what to do. We live in a rural community on the Oregon Coast -- love it. My husband and I have a 7 year old daughter and an 18 month old daughter. We also have a 4.5 year old German shorthaired pointer "Lewis". So a few days ago we heard about a local Weimaraner rescue group in need of placing some dogs. We love Weims, they are alot like GSPs. Anyway, we looked around the website, filled out an application, were approved and decided to adopt a new member of the family. Here is the dilemma. They have two 7 week old Weim/lab mix puppies to place -- really cute of course. There is also, however, a 1.5 year old Weim male who needs a home -- a beautiful dog. What to do. My husband is leaning toward the 1.5 year old and I am really torn. The Weim is up for adoption because he was a rescue dog and his current adoptive owner can't handle the crazy playing between him and her chocolate lab. He is a really sweet fellow, great with other dogs and kids. I know puppies are more work (housebreaking, etc.) and more expensive; the older dog is microchipped, has all of his shots and is neutered. But I think it would be a really good experience for my 7 year old to help raise a puppy. Also, Lewis is a crazy guy and add another 50-60 lb. hyper dude and the baby is going to be getting knocked down left and right. The puppies are both females and it will be awhile before they are big enough to really send her flying. Also the puppies are about a 2 hour drive away, to pick up the older dog is about 4 hours away. I am so torn. I feel guilty not giving the 1.5 year old a home because I know that typically puppies are easier to place . . .

I know that only we can decide what the best thing for our family is but I would appreciate any insights, thoughts, advice anyone has to give.

Hey thanks dumdog1964 ( I love your name by the way):

I appreciate the comments/advice. I think you are right. I know that Lewis has knocked the wee one down many times, just in his excitement of going through the doggie door, etc. Times that by two and it could be a recipe for disaster. I just wish I didn't feel guilty about the other guy. Why am I always plagued by guilt I wonder.

dumbdog gave you excellent food for thought, I also, would get a younger pup, with such a young child around. And of course, they will grow together!! Good Luck deciding!!
