I know this is a dog forum but I have a question regarding Cats (and cat behavior)
Sorry so long just curious about this. Was this normal cat behavior or was there something wrong with him
Okay so when my husband and I got our first place we got this grey tabby cat named Oliver. (he was a little older than they said he was)
But anyways the cat hated us. I think he felt that we were intruding on his territory (the apartment) but at the same time he got real mean real fast (and we never did anything but love him and care for him)
It first started by him scratching us. He got my husbands arm twice and then bit him on his shoulder.
He got my face 2 times and then the third time my grandparents were over and he bit my arm and then jumped for my face (he scratched it but I got out of the way (Had I not moved he would have gotten my eye)
My husband, my grandparents, and my parents all sat me down and told me that "That cat has to go"
Well it was a painful decision but I finally came around but being so close to Halloween no shelter would take him.
Well we had been in touch with a shelter in the next state and they had found someone looking for a cat to keep the mice out and he already knew about his issues and he was willing to take him so they passed along the info.
He is now a barn cat but he is very happy they say......(keep in mind I felt he was miserable with us)
But I got to thinking I had a cat like that when I was growing up to (well it lived at my grandparents) and that cat was pretty wild too. She got real sick (Cancer I believe) and died by age 2.
Is that normal cat behavior? Was there something wrong with him?
Part of me wants another cat in the future but I'm afraid to because of the cats I knew. (Plus I have a little terrier mix with a strong prey drive so its not practical)
Just curious thanks
I wanted to add he would also attack people walking in the door it didn't matter who it was. He would jump for their faces.
He was an indoor cat while he lived with us
It was a very difficult decision to give him up because I've always been a firm believer that when you bring home an animal its for life.
And I ofter wonder if things could have turned out different.
But then again I wouldn't have my two wonderful dogs either so I don't know
Oh and The cat came from the pound.....just thought I'd let you know (we didn't buy him from a breeder or anything)
I picked him because all the other cats kept bullying him.....I couldn't let him just sit there and be beat up on
Anyways thanks for the info.

Cats, like dogs, come with different temperaments and personalities. You must have made the right decision-- he just wasn't an indoor cat. It's quite possible that he had been a bit on the feral side before he landed in the shelter.
Now, I had a cat that I adopted as a little tiny kitten. Even as a kitten, he could be a bit viscious (sp) with his claws. One day, he crouched under the dining room table, in stalking mode, then ran across the room to my brother, who was lying on the sofa, minding his own business. My sweet little kitten leaped up onto my brother's face, and slid down, claws out. This was on a Saturday. Monday morning, those claws, and his testicles, came out! He was a much nicer kitty after that, although he still liked to play rough. When he wanted to play, he would first sit and ask nicely. If you did not respond, he would tap your arm with his paw. If you still did not "pony up," he would nip you with his teeth. And he would repeat this until you assumed the "position" which was hand up, perpendicular to the upper arm, so he could pounce and wrestle your hand into submission. (mean little beast!)
Andrew later passed away from liver failure, at the grumpy old age of 14. Even the day before he died, he intruded upon my sleep by nibbling my nose, attacking my hand and demanding a wrestling match under the covers. Gosh, I miss that cat!

Cats have a naturally moody behavior. Most of the time it wants to be alone or it wants to sleep a lot. I've read on a book about felines that cats have a tendency to be very irritable and aggressive when they are in stress. Check if your cat has sleeping issues. If he does not have enough sleep that might be the cause of his stubborn or irritable attitude.

Maybe you ex-cat has something like health issue in him and he gets in irritable behavior mostly with the surroundings. Glad to hear he's doing just fine on his new home now, but don't feel so bad that you think he's not so happy when he was with you, maybe you are not compatible with each other or your good sides doesn't meet, but I feel you can see and feel real pet owner on other animal...
