I have a 10 year old chihuahua he is always been good about going out side,
but since i had him at a vet for three days (he got stung by a scorpion)
he only uses his dogie door in the day, but at night he pees right by the door. I don't know what it could be. Does any one have a clue? | |

I'm just wondering if this has to do with the scorpion or being caged at the vet's at night and not being able to go out to go potty? Do you think it is afraid of being stung again---Did you see him get stung? If so, where was he at time he got stung? Was it at night? I am thinking that scorpions 'come out' at night--Is this true? As far as the not being able to go out at the vet's (or the scorpion for that matter)-----Can you try just taking him out on a leash--in the area where the doggie door is, unleash him there and wait a couple minutes and leave him there and you go back inside and let him come back in thru the doggie door, hopefully after he has gone potty. If he doesn't go potty--Stay out there with him till he does, then you go back in house and let him use the doggie door to come back in. This is to be done just before you go to bed OR whenever it is his usual time at night to go --just so you can do it before he pees by the door! Maybe a few repetitions and he'll go back to his old routine! |

I was with him when he was stung. It was during the day on our daily walk.
I do take him out before I go to sleep and when I get up it's the same thing
there is pee. Sometimes I just think he is to lazy to go out, but is there realy
a thing like a lazy dog?

I don't think laziness is the problem. I think he's reacting to first having been stung which must have hurt and made him feel awful and then, having to stay at the vet. It sounds to me as if he's traumatized by what happened to him. I'd just be patient and understanding with him. I'm sure the little guy will get over it.

I'm sure you are dealing with a "smart" dog here. He wants to lift his leg where he can see what is out there! In the dark he may encounter another painful experience. (Post traumatic Stress LOL)
If you are patient, I'm sure he will come out of it. I's try like Corky/Max said and accompany him outdoors in the dark. If you are top dog, he will follow your example and learn not to be afraid of what's in the dark and eventually venture out on his own. Be sure not to show stress while out there as he will follow your lead.
In the interim, you may need to make some accommodations. When you initially house trained your dog, did you use the paper method? If so, try putting down paper where you know he is peeing at night. Hopefully he will get used to going on the paper and you can eventually move it outside the doggie door. Pair this with going out doors in the dark with him, and you may have a winning combo.
If that doesn't work, you may want to look into litterbox training your dog at least for night time episodes.
Ther is nothing so frustrating than to have a good dog regress and not be able to help him. Be patient, he's afraid and needs your understanding.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Poor little guy, glad he's just fine. Dogs really have good memory and in fact they can remember anything that hurt them for their entire life. You can try to show a model for him, like other dogs running and playing outside where he could see it is safe out there. You need to build his confidence and interest with the things outside, a new game, new friend or anything new that will get his attention will be a good start.
