HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT CURRENT CONDITIONS AT THE TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY?
Hello! I am emailing this on behalf of the Toronto Humane Society Protest Group.
We are protesting the current management of the Toronto Humane Society and we need your help! As you have probably been seeing in the media, the citizens of Toronto and area are really concerned with what is happening inside the walls of the THS. We are reaching out to your organization to lend your support and solidarity in this fight. Toronto COULD and SHOULD have a world-class animal shelter - please help us to make this happen!
HOW YOUR ORGANIZATION CAN HELP!
We are currently organizing a second protest at the Toronto Humane Society. 2pm on Saturday Sept 12, 2009 at 11 River Street.
Please take a stand with us. PLEASE TELL YOUR STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, MEMBERS AND DONORS ABOUT OUR PROTEST! We want to send a strong message to the board of directors, the public, and to the media that we refuse to tolerate the animal abuse and neglect that goes on at the THS.
Below are some of the allegations against the Toronto Humane Society. These are the main reasons for the protest.
*Animals die in their cages when humane euthanasia could have ended that suffering. Management overrides veterinary decisions.
*Animals are not receiving adequate medical care because of THS policies.
*Animals are left to sit in their own waste for hours.
*Animals are eating expired food.
*Untrained staff handling wild animals with no protective equipment.
*No ongoing relationship between the Toronto Humane Society and organizations that govern education and training in wildlife rehabilitation. OWREN, NWRA and IWRC.
*Not enough staff in the wildlife department to handle the types and amounts of animals taken in. Resulting in animals left neglected and starving in their cages.
*Not enough adequate space to house as many wild animals that are taken in.
*Improper disease prevention.
*Raccoons and dogs being housed back to back in runs that share drains, allowing for hair, urine and feces to pass between dogs to raccoons.
Dog and cat carriers used to house raccoons, washed as regular (with a power washer and bleach and water) then used to house dogs and cats. This practice is highly dangerous as raccoon roundworm can live up to 10 years on any surface and can withstand even the most powerful cleaning agents.
*Donation money is being squandered on litigation and court cases (hundreds of thousands of donor dollars since Trow came into power).
* *We are very concerned about the way cash donations are handled at the THS. There are serious allegations of missing donor money, and incomplete financial records.
*There are serious discrepancies between the financial information given to the board of directors and what the THS reported to the Canada Revenue Agency.
*Sexually mature animals are being adopted out unaltered.
*The board of directors is arbitrarily rejecting membership applications.
*Charitable property is not being used for the purposes in which it was intended.
The Toronto Humane Society has allowed their relationship with established and reputable wildlife rehabilitation, and other animal rescue organizations to fall apart.
Over 200 people attended our last protest at the THS and it was pouring rain. We want to at least double the number of attendees. If you love animals and want to help them please join us on Sept 12. The board is hoping that public scrutiny of THS policies will die down over time. Lets keep these issues in the spotlight until serious changes are made at the Toronto Humane Society.
Your organization may well have had a negative experience with the current management of the Toronto Humane Society. If you agree that these matters need to be investigated and that the current management is not doing justice to the animals in their care, PLEASE COME OUT AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT.
You and your staff, volunteers, donors and members can read more about our protest and many, many media articles (Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star and City Pulse 24 to name a few) at the blog
