new antimicrobial is great hope for resistant strains
in sept 2008, a new product was created that did things no one had predicted; the stuff was created for a very, very specific purpose, and amazingly, not only did it work there...
it did incredible stuff elsewhere.
vets who work with marine-mammals know that life in a tank is rough on smooth, easily abraded skin on whales, dolphins, seals, etc.
they were looking for something that would STICK underwater - so that the meds used to prevent nasty infections would stay put long-enuf to accomplish something, vs falling off or washing off. this was very frustrating.
amazingly, their new goo-treatment, an ordinary antimicrobial WITH an adhesive, not only WORKS for whales - it may be the best new-weapon against infections that include extremely dangerous germs like MRSA, Super-Staph and other drug-resistant bacteria; which is incredible!
humans inside + outside hospitals; burn victims; folks with compromised immune systems; even the Beluga whales of the Georgia Aquarium have profited by this sticky-stuff! :--)
John Widgery has been a firefighter for over 2-decades. HE * WAS * THE * FIRST * HUMAN * PATIENT for this stuff, for his severe burns.
the Good news!
"We can take even the most drug-resistant bacteria and make them susceptible to very low concentrations of... low-class antibiotics; things that aren't really considered to work anymore," says Branson Ritchie, D.V.M., Ph.D., a professor at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. "We can take those very drug-resistant bacteria and kill them."
Widgery had first- and second-degree burns on his face and arms, after an explosion. "When I stood up, I thought my hair was in my face...
I wiped my face and found out it was my skin... hanging in my eyes and my mustache. I reached for it and it was gone. My eyebrows were gone."
with 12 days treatment, his face was near-normal! the experimental compound can be used on marine-mammals by adding a bioadhesive so it sticks underwater.
this is an incredibly hopeful note - MRSA and other dangerous resistant strains are now in the community, NOT just in hospitals - where they were dangerous enuf.
now U can get MRSA by using a weight-machine at the local gym...
it often masquerades as a pimple, that is bright pink or red, and rapidly becomes far too painful to be a normal pimple.
burn-patients have always been at terrible risk of infection, as their skin is no longer protecting their muscles, bloodstream, etc.
this is wonderful news! :--)
cheers,
--- terry
