Question

Todd, did you check this out through Snopes to see if it is a valid threat----I found out the 'hard' way that most aren't real! I tried to get into Snopes to check but my computer needs too many updates and I can't get in! If you find something on it --Will you copy what Snopes says about it? Thanks!

Emails with pictures of Gordon Brown actually smiling are being sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it!

If you get an email along the lines of Gordon Brown smiling or Gordon Brown even "looking happy" don't open the attachment.

This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but mainly in England , Wales and Scotland

Be considerate & send this warning to who ever you know.

Origins: The classics never go away, it seems, so just in time for the 2006 Winter Olympics someone dusted off an old virus warning hoax (most commonly seen in its incarnation as the "[Virtual] Card for You" hoax)

and reintroduced it as an "Olympic Torch" virus warning (also known as the "Invitation virus"). In 2009 it was sent around again, that time as a warning about "Black in the White House."

The bottom line is that this same basic hoax has been circulating in various languages since at least 2000, with occasional changes along the way. No such (incurable) virus exists, has been identified by McAfee, or was reported on by CNN.

The 2007 "Merry Christmas" variant of the Invitation/Olympic Torch hoax should not be confused with the (real) Zafi.D worm from 2004, which did spread via attachments to messages bearing subject lines of "Merry Christmas" but is now rare and easily caught and eliminated by most anti-virus software products.

Snopes is invaluable for this sort of thing. It's also good for investigating charity appeals and the like as well - "Bill Gates will give $1 towards this child's operation every time this email is sent" type thing. I never forward a warning or appeal without checking Snopes first.

Default Virus?

You can still never be to careful, nothing worse than crashing your PC. If I don't know where the email came from it's gone. If it looks a little strange in the subject line, I'll call the friend who sent it, or email them back and ask about it before opening. You can't be to cautious these days.

I make a point of checking out any of these "virus warnings" before forwarding them on. I have yet to receive one that was not a hoax.

Exclamation

This should be ligit this time lol...

One of my family's friends sent us who works with microsoft so I though I'd pass it on...

I just home from a Microsoft meeting/comvention and their is a new nasty virus out. I now most everybody has a block for pop ups. If you happen to get a pop up DO NOT HIT THE RED X. Instead do this, hold ALT @ F4. Microsoft and the other virus protection companies DO NOT have a fix for it as yet.....

Think there must be something missing there Todd. I get pop ups all the time - this site is one of the worst - and I just close them. I think there must be a particular pop up that causes the problem, not just ALL of them. Perhaps you could ask your friend for more details.
