Pics of my garden
My banana plants at the beginning of summer
My banana plants now.
My orange tree And what's left of my voodoo lily after the storm knocked it off it's pedestal.

Love the banana plant! I am far too impatient to be a gardener but something that grows at that speed would be right up my street. Don't think it would like our wet and windy weather though!

Luna come plant in my yard too. I was just telling my husband I'm through with gardening. I SUCK at it and my plants don't thrive like they should. I'm tired of the heartache.
I also love the banana plant, the leaf reminds me of being in Mexico. Are the plants going to survive our winters or are you transplanting them inside?

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Gosh! It is sure nice to see pics in this forum again!
And Lange (fellow Taurus)--I am thinking the same thing about gardening--vegetable gardening anyway. For several reasons (and Mother Nature being a lot of it) my garden did not get weeded like it should of and the weeds grew like crazy---Lol, I was afraid to go through that jungle and I pretty much gave up on it. Health problems are not letting me do what I want to do and I hope I don't get the garden fever next spring and do it again! Will prob. plant tomatoes and some beans though. I like to garden for the fresh veggies for my 2 dogs home made meals---so I may, lol, still be adding things like pea pods, sum. squash, and broccoli. Of course the favorite vegetable for them--asparagus is a perennial so that will always be there. Yikes! It sounds like I am thinking spring already and we haven't had fall or winter yet!!

LOLOL Yes, I'm thinking I can pretty much guarantee that you will want to try again come Spring from the sounds of it. Stubburn streak maybe? BTW Which sign is a perfectionist? Do you remember? I can't but I'd guess it would be Virgo.
Again, the exact same thing that kinda just was the straw that broke the camels back for me too..the weeds. Since I left on vacation for such a long time, I came back to weeds up the wazoo. So I said, the hell with it all! I've been trying to get my flower beds weed free for 4 years. Have invested in different mulches, different matterials to lay under and nothing makes enough of a difference for me. Plus, my flowers don't thrive like they should. And I don't much like weeding and even less since I have climbing roses with thorns poking me. Maybe I'l try a veggie garden like you, but in a container box. LOL It would do good for my ego to get some sort of reward for my effort. LOL
We should start a thread on gardening so we can see what everyone is up to You can even point and laugh at whatever my miserable creation might be.

Yes, the banana plants have survived being outside in Ohio for 4 years. They are cold hardy up to -20F. I put a foot of mulch on top of them in the fall the day after the first frost. I am going to bring one of them in for the winter to see if it will keep growing and be huge in the spring.
To keep weeds away, I plant all my plants and then I put newspapers around them. I make sure that I stack at least 3 or 4 pages thick. Then I cover the newspapers with mulch and you never even know they are there. I do it every year. Very little weed pulling all summer.
If you really want to grow great plants, use miracle grow garden soil, miracle grow potting soil and peat/sphagnum moss mixed together in equal parts. If you are planting banana plants, mix it also with miracle grow cactus soil or sand. Plant your plants in that in the spring before you lay down your newspaper.
Also, plant plenty of dianthas and dusty millers. They are fast growing, easy to grow and hard to kill. And they are beautiful and come back every year. No replanting involved.

LOLOL Yes, I'm thinking I can pretty much guarantee that you will want to try again come Spring from the sounds of it. Stubburn streak maybe? Could be that old Taurus trait! BTW Which sign is a perfectionist? Do you remember? I can't but I'd guess it would be Virgo. Lol, it is Virgo--My sister is one (both)--Virgo and perfectionist! I would say that Libra would come in 2nd (in a way) and they make good lawyers as they will fight tooth and nail for the truth to be known--only problem is--It is the truth the way they see it. Another trait of a Libra is that they want everything balanced--in good harmony.
Again, the exact same thing that kinda just was the straw that broke the camels back for me too..the weeds. Since I left on vacation for such a long time, I came back to weeds up the wazoo. And I don't much like weeding and even less since I have climbing roses with thorns poking me.Your flower beds sound just like mine and I also have thorny roses--Boy it hurts when you get caught by one!! Maybe I'l try a veggie garden like you, but in a container box. LOL It would do good for my ego to get some sort of reward for my effort. LOL
Luna, You must have 'nicer' (weaker) weeds! I have done the newspaper thing--It helps for a while. But I ended up covering a lot of my garden with black plastic and they still manage to work their way in!! And bigger and thicker because of the 'hot' plastic.
And yeh, I know that plastic is not good for the soil.

If weeds are coming up through your newspaper you make it thick enough. I've used the whole newspaper in some areas.
