That's not spilled coffee...
One of cats insists on going everywhere but in the little box. We have 2 Rubbermaid totes and 1 regular littler box for them to go in. She's been to the vet repeatedly and there's nothing wrong with her. She is fixed though. On Monday she has started doing her business on my kitchen counters. This is absolutely unsanitary and I don't know what to do about it besides either take the cat to the shelter, put the cat outside and leave it out, or have it euthanized. I did put a motion detector on the kitchen counter and it scared the living daylights out of her and she didn't go on the counter, so she went and sprayed on Ryan's grandfather clock (belonged to his grandmother). Any ideas guys?
I also have to keep her from going upstairs because she pees on the little persons things.

Is she elderly? Our cat seemed to suffer from dementia for a few months before she died. She started sleeping in one of the kitchen cupboards. The final straw was when she poo'd in the toaster. We put a litter tray in the bathroom and made her a comfy bed in one of her favourite spots and she made herself at home in there for her last few weeks. It sounds a bit odd but she was happy there. She saw all the family everyday, she could sleep undisturbed and any strange toilet happenings were easy to clean.

EEEOWWW!! (whatever)! That is really gross, Luna! Lol, Watch out or you'll get our pics taken off again!! Have no suggestions for you----How can you stand to ever put food on that counter again---no matter how much 'scrubbing' you do! My kitchen would definitely be off limits to that cat. (I am not a very good cat lover anyhow, sorry!)
Hey, maybe I do have an idea---Spray Bitter Apple on your counters for a while or if desperate enough (and I would be!!) ---use some hot pepper or something else that cats don't like to be around--which I don't know much about cats but, darn,( and that is not dam--it looks like it but it really is dar n if you look close enough--stupid to have it look so close, lol, must be the Windows 7) there was something I just read somewhere that they don't like--Think it was citrus--like lemon smell.

I have wiped everywhere she's went with everything imaginable. No, she's not elderly. She used to be my favorite cat until she started going on my counters. I am thinking about taking her to the vet and getting her the vaccines required for an outdoor cat and putting her out. I can't have this in my kitchen. There is no way to keep her out of my kitchen. She can jump over the pet gate. We do have cat shelters around our house (cat shelters meaning something we built that stray cats can sleep in on our property) and she can sleep under our porch. I just don't want this in my house anymore. If I take her to a shelter, she will be euthanized because she won't go in the cat box.

It's been a loooong time since I had a cat. I don't even remember their poop being so much. Man, the photos really say a lot don't they... eww!
The sad thing is there's no point in putting her in a shelter since she won't find a home. If it's a kill shelter she will be put down like you said. With so many cats needing homes and not having this problem, I doubt that someone will adopt her. Umm...not sure what you're options are really. Is it legal to let your cats live outside? I'm seriously clueless with cats, but it she can, why not?..At least she's alive living a decent cats life, not caged up, not putting you & kids in a bad situation...

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

There's a lady that lives a few doors down from me that has about 20 cats outside. I'm glad they all stay down at her house though. I don't think it would be a serious problem for me put my cat out as long as she's fixed and has been vaccinated for rabies, parvo, feline leukemia and feline AIDS. Maybe she will even help with the serious mole problem we've been having. Those things dug a hole in my yard and Buster got his foot stuck in it. I'm glad he didn't break his leg.

My post must have been swallowed into the nether world...back to what I said..
There are shelter groups that have projects where they capture, vaccinate, s/n and release cats so I would think it would be ok too.

That is great. I wish they would bring that program here. That one lady down the street has taken in about every stray cat that gets dumped on this block and she's elderly and on fixed income, so she can't get all of those cats fixed and they just keep breeding.
I put a motion detector on the kitchen counter. It's went off a couple of times, but so far no more cat poop on my kitchen counters. I don't want to keep that motion detector there all the time though. I forgot it was there a few times and set it off myself, and that thing is LOUD! It scared the living daylights out of me.

Cats dont poop in places just to be spiteful, something is going on to drive kitty up on the bench to do business.
Most cats prefer to do their toileting in privacy somewhere quiet and comfortable, is it possible that current litter tray locations are being disturbed by other animals/ people moving through in a busy traffic area? In which case kitty will start seeking spots where he/ she feels safer, in this case up higher on the kitchen bench........(check the top of your fridge too :S)
If you have had this cat vet checked, and all cleared, this is a behavioral issue, most likely due to some sort of circumstance that has increased stress and anxiety for the cat. Perhaps some daily rescue remedy may help calm kitties nerves and buy time for you to get to the bottom of what is causing this cats anxiousness. Or you may even need to discuss with the vet some sort of anti depressant.
To curb interest in the bench sprinkle some cayenne pepper powder on it as soon as kitty jumps up on that she will very quickly clear off once a whiff of that stuff is up her nose.

All of the littler boxes are in low traffic areas of the house. and tucked into corners where nobody can see them. This particular kitty just started going on the counters recently, but she's always had an issue of going in the litter box. She took a crap in our bathtub this morning. She peed on Ryan's work pants last night. She's peed on my clean laundry a few times. If I don't put it away as soon as I get it out of the dryer, then she'll go in it. She is 5 years old. She's sprayed my curtains. She even backed up to Buster and sprayed him in the face once while he was sleeping.
I don't think it's a sudden behavioral issue. I don't think it's anxiety either. She's the most laid back cat on the planet. She just uses our house like it's the great outdoors.
