Calicoes are all female. There have been a few males born, but they have to be born with both female and male alleles in order to be born a male calico. A male calico is so rare that you have a better chance at finding diamonds in your back yard. They are also sterile too due to the genetic defect. So the next time you see a calico, you will now know what sex it is without asking. All calicoes are female.

Fluffy says thank you. Her mommy was a purebred, registered Maine coon that got loose and mated with a big orange stray kitty. I watched Fluffy being born and when she was 12 weeks old, I brought her home with me.

I had no idea. That's an interesting tid bit. How old is Fluffy? She's really something spectacular to look at even as far as the parti colored cats go.

Fluffy is 6 years old.

I always thought Calico was a breed. I would have described her as tortoiseshell and white - again, like the Calico, they are female.

Fluffy is beautiful. Just she have a feisty personality? Ours did (smooth coated) and the vet said it went with her colouring.

Calico is not a breed. It is a color. If the cat is at least 1/3 white, it is calico. If it has little or no white on it at all, it is tortoiseshell. When someone says calico, I know there will be a great deal of white on the cat. When they say tortoiseshell, there will be little or no white at all.

You can't see it in this pic, but Fluffy's whole underside is white, so she is a calico.

So Fluffy is a calico Maine coon mutt kitty.

We just call them tortie and white. It is my favourite cat colouring.

Fluffy's perch. You can see her white a lot better here. I almost called her Two-face (Batman character) because one half is orange and the other is black.

That's lovely. My cat used to sit on top of the stereo speakers and survey her kingdom from the highest point in the room!
