Greyhounds
I would really like to adopt a dog, but what I really want is a greyhound. Does anyone know anything they can share with me about this dog breed? Thanks!

I do volunteer work with GPAC (Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada) and have been doing stuff off and on for 6 yrs with them.I used to have co-ownership of a couple (R.I.P).
What do you want to know?
Greyhounds can live up to 12 (and sometimes even 15) years.10-12 is about average for them.
They are very quiet, docile, friendly dogs that get along well with everyone they meet. Most are friendly with cats, kids and other dogs.Despite their size, they are very well mannered in the house.
It is funny...they seem so much different from other breeds. Many people say they are almost like huge cats....except friendlier.

My mom adopted a greyhound from a local trach here in our area and she was the best dog! Very sweet and loving to all. We used to take her to the local ball field that was completly fenced in and watch her run circles. Man are they fast! If they ever get away they could prolly run for days! Mom ended up moving somewhere you couldnt have large dogs so she had to give Molly away to a friend. I guess the friend got to comfortable with letting her out and thought because she never ran away she she was ok out there. Well she was wrong and poor molly got hit by a train..It was awful!

When I lived in Florida, the local dog track always had had dogs in cages up for adoption.I can only assume they were dogs that that just wernt fast enough for racing. From what I hear, the breeders try their best to find homes. But most of them ,,well, just get eliminated.Sad idea,, but its a business for them.Fastest dog wins, the rest of the litter just costs them money.
I had a neighbor that adopted two of the worn out racing dogs and since I was usually out in the yard working when she would be walking them. She would stop and say Hi,,those dogs were the most laid back, friendly dogs you could ever meet. She told me,that they are pretty darn lazy also and the best house dogs she ever had.A year later, another neighbor rescued a Greyhound from the Daytona Beach race track, same response from that person. Best dog, they ever had.
Seems strange to me,you can take a dog that has had minimal human contact in the racing circuit for years and it accepts home/personal contact so easily.Thats pretty amazing to me that they can adapt that quickly.

I have heard that they are the most lovable dogs and don't need to run a great deal. They have a hard time walking stairs. Therefore, if you have stairs, you need to show them how and give them a great deal of love.
I had a meeting in Florida eight months ago. Walked in saw two greyhounds peeking around the corner of an office, I called them (I am now on my knees in a business suit - have never meet the people I am calling on--but I am playing with the dogs. Yes you will love them.
