Default Rescued dog is a compulsive licker?

I rescued my chocolate lab (Reese) from a abuse/neglect situation approx four years ago. She is a compulsive licker. She licks everything and everyone all the time. She has settled down with me a lot, but when I have company she is all over the place and licking and she is RELENTLESS! I have tried everything, even paid for one-on-one training but its like she has ADHD. Her behavior makes my other dogs more exiteable as well. I love Reese to death and she loves people and loves when we get company. Muzzles do nothing for the tongue and I hate that idea anyway. And I want to avoid having to keep her seperated. She does eventually settle down, but it takes some time. I know my company hates it, and I hate it and its just very chaotic. Anyone ever have success in training a dog not to lick? And calm down quick with company?

Get some squeaky toys and treats to get her mind off it. She's licking because she is bored. Not because she really likes something...

Take her for a walk every day, this will help calm her nerves. Maybe you could get her on the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel

Mine does that. I think it is a compulsive nursing or plea for acceptance...either way, we let him do it because it isn't hurting anyone. It does get annoying, and when it does I tell him to stop and he does, but he always looks a bit bummed, because he is only doing it because he is trying to express submission or love or something that is probably a genuine feeling. As for company, you might want to try crate training. Just put her in a crate when company comes over so that she is calm and reward her for being calm. I have a pitbull and I have to do that sort of stuff with him because he is very excitable and always thinks eveyone wants to be jumped on and licked to death.

Sounds like typical lab behavior. Try taking her dog obedience class where she will be around other dogs and people. And remember consistancy is the key. Make sure the no lick/jump rule applies to everyone who visits your home, even if they say they don't mind...

I have two suggestions. Or three. 1) Limit how much contact she has with strangers.2) If she needs to be around strangers, or other stress situations have a special special special treat chew for her, and have her in a confined area with it. ( we use the everlasting treats, and the kitchen with a baby gate)3) If you really can't calm her, a pill is totally appropriate-- we would take one if we were stressed, no? Benedryl is cheap and works well-- 1 Mg per lbs of dog. (an asdult pill is 25 mg)
