Please read my other answer adressed to the lady thinking of getting a Westie, because all the points I covered are important to consider before embarking on getting , buying or rescuing any kind of dog or dogs, it is a big responsibility, and not one to be entered into lightly, albeit it is a dog, it is another life you become responsible for and before embarking do your sums, there are various expenses, not luxuries that you must work out first, having a word with the local vet, will fill you in on costs of foods, vacanations required, licences, and and other things like life span of any particular breed, the peculiarities in say possible health problems,(German shepherds suffer in a lot of cases a condition that badly affects their hips ,called hip displaysia, our 7 month had to be put down for that ) so do be aware of these ahead of time. But most rescued dogs are so hungry for affection and care they make wonderful pets when the basic training techniques are sorted. So all the best, dogs really are mans best friend, treat them with love and they will repay you and protect you faithfully for many years.
