Default Dog needs a home

I have recently been given a dog that someone found dumped on the side of the road, I believe he is about 1 1/2 to 2 years old, has a great personality, housebroken, well behaved, walks well on a leash and rides beautifully in the car. I think he might be a pitbull mix, possibly with a mastiff, he's a pretty big guy I guess around 70 to 100 pounds, very loving gets along well with my full grown 2 year old cat and loves every one, I live alone in a one bedroom apartment and work full time, I just don't have the time for a big dog!!! I am located near Elkhart IN.

Looks like a hound dog might be in his mix. Good luck finding a home, he sounds like a sweet boy.

I have tried everything I can think of to try to find him a new home, I really don't have any options left to me> I am taking him to the human shelter on Saturday, I know they will put him down, but I believe that is better then the side of the road!!! I truely hate to do this to him, but I can't keep him any longer!!

check your local directory or online for dog rescues, not all dog rescues are for purebreds. I think you will find several in your area.
Indiana Animal Shelters
Here are some of the shelters available to you, all you need to do is explain the dog was found on the side of the road and that you have attempted to locate the owners and no one has come forward.
Just inquire as to whether they are a no kill shelter, if they are than these are the ones where the dog has a better chance. Usually places that indicate they are a rescue are probably a better choice.

You would be surprised at how many dogs are micro-chipped. You can take the dog to a shelter to be scanned. If he is chipped, then the owner can be contacted. I work in rescue and all dogs we rescue are chipped with our name and number so that we get the call if the dog up in a shelter. We have a scanner as do most rescue orgs. If you have any in your area, give them a call to ask them to help you out and ask them if they can scan the dog.

Yeah, contact PAWS or the ASPCA-- they will try to put him in foster care, or adopt him out, if they can. He does sound wonderful. (Good looking, too!) Unfortunately, I can't have him either-- no room, for one, and I'm also in another state. "Angels for Animals" is another rescue org; I don't know how widespread it is, but I think there are several chapters throughout the country.
