Default Can I be sued for giving a stray dog to a rescue group?

We found a very large stray dog on a winter night. It did not have a collor on, and of course no identification. We called the town shelter several times to find it's owner. I called vets in the area.No one called there for the lost dog. I did not put the dog in the shelter because this particular breed does not do well in shelters. I would not get the medical care it needed. The dog seemed to have a temperature and not feeling well. The paws were bleeding. I called the rescue group because I knew the dog would get the medical attention it needed. They came for the dog. 5 days later I saw a posting for the lost dog. I called the rescue group to let them know that the owner surfaced and that the dog should be returned. The owner was notified. She retrieved the dog. Now I am being sued for these reasons; I was to have taken the collor off the show dog, I was to have the dog taken out of state to be spayed, and to be retreated for lymes disease, kept dog in my house against the dogs will

Hopefully the judge will have better sense than the dog's owner. You can't be expected to keep a stray dog in your own home indefinately. Getting it to a shelter was a responsible thing to do. The liable person in this instance is the owner who did not protect his dog by confining it. The owner sounds like an idiot. I hope all goes well for you.

Anyone one can see you did all you could to help the dog and owner. Get yourself a good lawyer, they will be able to put an end to this persons greed.

That's ridiculous! You cannot be held in the wrong for this. You did the right things- more than most people would have done! Know that you helped and don't worry about this. Apparently the owner is a jerk.

you can be sued for anything nowadays. it sounds like a bunch of horrible people are trying to get money from you. It depends on how much they are asking, but usually if its a small amount it'll go to small claims court, which is usually arbitrated. Get yourself a lawyer just in case. But it'll probably be thrown out, even if a judge agrees to hear the case. Because it sounds like fraud. First off, they cant prove anything, unless they have video of u going into their yard and taking the dog. second of all, the rescue group should have kept your name anonymous. it is the rescue group who should have checked to see if the dog was tattooed or chipped. yes you can get sued, but nothing will come of it. its a good samaratan thing. dont worry too much about it. and when it gets thrown out, i'd counter sue for defamation of character and losses ensued because of the frivolous lawsuit.

No, you can not be sued. You found the dog and did the responsible thing. The owner was lucky they retrieved the dog from rescue. It could have ended up at the local pound - if found by animal control - or worse (found by person that sells dogs (strays) to people that fight dogs for $$.

This won't hold up in court. The dog was in need of medical attention, and was wandering the street as a stray. You had the dog's best interests in mind. "Against the dog's willl?" Dogs don't know what to do when they are lost and bleeding. If you had not stepped in it probably would have been picked up by animal control and euthanized by now.

I have never heard of anybody being sued for helping out a stray dog. I hope the judge throws out the suit and fines the owner big time for not taking better care of their "show " dog.Have you contacted the rescue center? They can probably help with your case, expecially if the dog was sick and in need of medical help. It's a shame that the owner couldn't just be happy to get the dog back. Sounds like they're just out for money.Good Luck. And please don't stop helping strays. You did a great thing.

If I was the dogs owner I would be greatful that you rescued it instead of leaving it outside to die or get sicker. I think what you did was right. I would have done the same thing. I would see if I could get info on the medical records on the dog from the rescue center and also support from them saying what you did was right. You thought of the dog first and made sure it got proper treatment and attention. Maybe the owners should have kept better watch of their dog in the first place. And why did they post the missing dog sign 5 days later and not right away? They should have called the shelter. I hope you win the case. I see nothing wrong with what you did. Some people just want an easy way to make money.
